Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump has reinstated Cuba on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from China, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry denouncing the action as a demonstration of American “bullying” and unilateralism.
China on Biden’s side? No surprise there.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun expressed China’s disapproval of the US decision, stating that it “runs counter to facts… (and) fully reveals the hegemonic, high-handed and bullying face of the United States,” Guo Jiakun said.
US-China Relations Under Strain
This latest development comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and China, reflecting a broader pattern of strained relations between the two superpowers. The Biden administration, which preceded Trump’s recent inauguration, had been closely watched for its policy direction towards China, particularly in light of previous trade tensions and sanctions on Chinese technology companies.
Throughout 2024, the US took several actions that China perceived as hostile, including expanding chip export controls, adding entities to various sanction lists, and finalizing investment restrictions against China in sectors like semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
The reclassification of Cuba’s status regarding terrorism is not just a bilateral issue between the US and Cuba, but has broader implications for international relations.
This sets the stage, almost, for the new U.S.-China relationship; when Trump refuses to cave, China knows we’re back in business.
