In the United States, a significant cultural shift has occurred over the last several decades. Indeed since the 2016 presidential election in which Donald Trump achieved an upset remarkable victory over Hillary Clinton to become the 45th commander-in-chief of the United states, the political tensions and divisions within the country have only become more exacerbated and transparent. Conservative and progressives continue to battle at nearly every level of politics, and nearly every aspect of American life. It seems that nearly every facet an industry within the country has had politics infused into the mainstream. Whether it be sports, reality tv, clothing brands, beverages and food, or anything in between, nobody’s safe from political marketing any longer.
In truth, America has become a hyper capitalist, consumerist society, in which most people pursue empty, instant gratification pleasure, and do not think in the moral and virtuous long-term sense. While that statement is indeed a generalization, and many Americans across the country still possess foundational goodness in their character and personal principles, as a society the United States has devolved greatly over the last 70 years since the post World War II era began. In the state of delaware, a piece of legislation passed the state legislature in which physician assisted suicide becomes a legal option for individuals.
Many senators and representatives in Delaware spoke passionately for and against the bill. It is worth noting that no reputable medical organizations support position assisted suicide. Ultimately, it is a clear indicator that American society no longer places an emphasis on the value of life. Thomas Jefferson’s words in the Declaration of Independence, claiming that people have the right to “life liberty and the pursuit of happiness” may no longer be true in the United States. Many Republican senators in Delaware said that the bill is a despicable statement and asserted that it indirectly claims that some lives are in theory more valuable than others.
