A Democratic advisor recently laughed at a former GOP Congressman during a live interview, referring to his critique of Vice President Kamala Harris as “a joke.”
On Wednesday August 14, Aisha Mills, a left-wing political strategist, joined former Rep. Scott Taylor of Virginia in an interview segment of Erin Burnett’s nightly news show on CNN. The anchor brought up the Democratic nominee’s lead in recent polling, just weeks after replacing President Joe Biden on the ticket.
Currently, Harris is ahead of former president Donald Trump by multiple points in the most recent national surveys. Inquiring about her guests’ response to this, Burnett was told by Taylor that “it will fade.” He explained that Harris has “been consistent” over the past few weeks only because of her widespread “positive press.”
Taylor added that he would be slightly “concerned” about her lead if the “momentum” was growing over several months consistently. He then pointed out that “the reality” of an election is that polls this far ahead of Election Day are not “indicative” of how the votes will be cast come November.
The former representative used his own failed campaign as an example, noting that he had been up by seven points in the week before the election that he lost and saying that there is “a long way to go” in the current presidential race.
Taylor then got into reminiscing, telling Burnett of the first time he heard Harris give a speech at the NAACP National Convention in 2018. That year, he was also invited to attend the event, which was the same time that rumors circulated about her being the “next female Obama.”
But when she got in front of the crowd—which, he pointed out, was all African Americans, most of them women with the same political views—Taylor said “it was horrible.” He described Harris as failing to “connect with” the audience and her words “fell very flat.” Even that instance, Taylor said he told his staff later that she would be “going nowhere” if she submitted a presidential bid that year.
Cue Aisha Mills, who burst out laughing at this point in the Congressman’s remarks, even as he continued talking. Taylor added his belief that more citizens will “dislike” Harris if they witnessed more of her speeches, leading her current “momentum” to reach “a screeching halt.”
Mills—still laughing—then said that his comments were “comical and a joke,” reflecting the views of other members of the GOP who, according to her, are just now appearing and saying they were observing Harris “for years” even when she “wasn’t up to anything.”
The Democrat continued to say that her party “absolutely” holds the momentum in the race so far, thanks to them “shar[ing] the me values” and goals of where the country should be headed, despite potential disagreements on “every single detail.” Mills added that policy disputes within the same party are not going to result in Harris “los[ing] support.
Election Day is set for November 5, promising a close race between Harris and Trump as tensions and competition continue to rise.
