A recent incident in southwest Las Vegas has left residents feeling uneasy after a homeowner fatally shot a man who was reportedly breaking windows and attempting to enter their home. The incident occurred near Torrey Pines Drive and Flamingo Drive on Thursday morning, shocking many of the typically quiet neighborhood’s residents.
Jennifer Sauberan, a long-time resident of the area, shared her concerns with KLAS-TV. “I was shocked,” Sauberan said. “It’s a very quiet neighborhood, and we never have anything ever happen here.” Sauberan added that the event made her reevaluate her own safety measures. “I have cameras around my house now,” she explained, adding that she recently installed floodlights to boost her sense of security.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) responded to the incident around 7:40 a.m. According to Lieutenant Jason Johansson, the homeowner called 911 after noticing a strange man breaking windows and attempting to force his way inside. Despite being warned to leave, the man reportedly acted irrationally and continued trying to gain entry. It was at this point that the homeowner fired a shot.
When officers arrived, they found the man with a gunshot wound in the driveway. He was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries. Lt. Johansson indicated that “self-defense” factors are at play in the investigation and stated that the homeowner is not expected to face charges, though the final decision will be made by the Clark County District Attorney’s office.
As authorities continue to investigate, Sauberan and her neighbors are left to process the event. “It was so unexpected,” she said. “We never have anything ever happen in this neighborhood, ever.”
Anyone with additional information about the case is encouraged to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous.
