To tackle the ongoing crisis at the southern border, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has turned to advanced technology for assistance. Recent developments reveal the agency’s partnership with Pangiam Intermediate Holdings, a Virginia-based company specializing in facial recognition and advanced biometrics. The collaboration aims to develop and deploy Anomaly Detection Algorithms (ADA), an artificial intelligence tool that will scan cargo trucks and vehicles crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Pangiam, in collaboration with West Virginia University, will utilize its expertise in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning to support CBP’s border and national security missions. Implementing the ADA is expected to enhance the agency’s capabilities in detecting and preventing potential threats at the border.

Another strategic partnership formed by CBP is with Altana, a New York-based company, to combat the influx of fentanyl and other synthetic narcotics into the United States. Altana’s Altana Atlas, a comprehensive global supply chain map, will be utilized to stop foreign goods produced using forced labor from entering the United States. By leveraging this technology, CBP aims to ensure the integrity of the supply chain and protect against illegal substances and exploitative labor practices.

CBP has joined forces with Ghost Robotics, a Philadelphia-based company specializing in robotic technology, addressing the need for increased surveillance and patrols. Ghost Robotics will provide robotic dogs to patrol the border, equipped with advanced features that enable them to traverse rugged terrain and operate in extreme weather conditions. This innovation holds promise in locating and assisting migrants who may be in distress, preventing tragic incidents such as drowning or heat-related fatalities.

CBP has also implemented additional security measures, including license-plate readers at checkpoints near the border and facial recognition systems for passengers arriving on international flights. These technologies contribute to the agency’s efforts to enhance border security and ensure the smooth flow of legitimate travelers.

Integrating advanced technology into CBP’s operations marks a significant step forward in managing the challenges at the southern border.
