French soccer star Kylian Mbappe has contacted the sport’s governing body, UEFA, and accused his former club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of not paying him his bonuses and salary of nearly £47 million.
The 25-year-old Mbappe is currently playing in La Liga’s historic club, Real Madrid, which has been home to some top global soccer stars, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to Mbappe, he did not receive a salary for the last three months of his seven-year tenure at PSG, and his £30 million in bonuses also remain unpaid.
However, PSG believes that the soccer star himself committed not to take the money should he decide to leave the team as a free agent. In June of this year, Real Madrid and Mbappe finally reached an agreement, and the star player joined the club as a free agent for a five-year contract.
If Mbappe proves PSG guilty, the club can have its license revoked by the UEFA, which would essentially ban them from the professional circuit unless they pay hefty fines for breaching the agreements.
French football governing body, Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), can also impose a transfer ban on the club for failing to pay due money to the athlete.
It was previously believed that Mbappe and the PSG ended their relationship on a high note, with the football icon agreeing to leave some of his unpaid dues.
The financial tussle between them started in 2023, but the athlete called it an “honor” to play in the team during the Globe Soccer Awards in May, which suggested that he might have decided to move on. During his speech, the Frenchman thanked all his teammates and promised to keep working hard to make his name among football greats.
Mbappe participated in his first UEFA game when he was yet to turn 16 and made his debut in the senior UEFA championship at 17.
In 2018, he became the youngest player in 60 years to score in the FIFA World Cup final and helped his team clinch the golden trophy at 19. His ambitious character also brought him into the spotlight during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, where he went on a scoring spree and kicked the ball thrice into the net, but his team lost to Argentina by 4-2 in a nail-biting penalty shootout.
