A Childhood Defined by Fear and Strict Rules
Jinger Duggar Vuolo, known for her family’s reality TV show, grew up in an environment dominated by the teachings of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). This organization, founded by Bill Gothard in 1961, imposed stringent guidelines on its followers, particularly women and children. Vuolo’s childhood was marked by a constant state of fear and anxiety, as she struggled to navigate the complex web of rules and expectations.
“Fear was a huge part of my childhood,” Vuolo said.
Yep. That sounds like a cult.
The IBLP’s teachings significantly impacted Vuolo’s daily life. She was required to wear only skirts and dresses, avoid music with drums, and shun certain friendships. The organization taught women to be subservient to their husbands and discouraged activities such as dating, dancing, and engaging with pop culture. These restrictions left Vuolo feeling isolated and uncertain about her place in the world.
These aren’t normal Christians…
The Turning Point
In 2017, Vuolo began to question the beliefs she had been raised with. This internal struggle eventually led her to leave the IBLP, though she maintains that she remains a “strong Christian.” Her departure from the organization marked the beginning of a journey towards personal freedom and self-discovery.
Vuolo’s relocation from Texas to Los Angeles in 2019 served as a catalyst for further change. The move allowed her to distance herself from the pressures of her past and explore her own identity. Her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, played a crucial role in encouraging her to express her own opinions and develop her individual personality.
“He was like, ‘This is crazy,’ I was afraid to have any differing opinion on anything small or big. He wasn’t going to let me stay there. He said, ‘I want to know who you are. I want to know what you think about this topic. I want to know what’s going on inside your mind. I don’t want you to be a clone of me.’ For the first time, I started to realize arguments don’t equal rejection. And if you disagree with your spouse, it’s not a bad thing,” Duggar Vuolo said.
Sharing Her Story
Vuolo has taken significant steps to share her experiences and help others who may be in similar situations. She has written two books, “Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith From Fear” and “People Pleaser: Breaking Free from the Burden of Imaginary Expectations.” These works detail her journey from a restrictive upbringing to finding personal freedom and authenticity.
“I think it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I realized that at the end of the day, I had to speak my truth,” Duggar Vuolo said. “It was difficult because I did receive some criticism from friends and loved ones.”
Through her books and public appearances, Vuolo aims to critique her upbringing and promote a version of Christianity that focuses on grace rather than strict rules. She emphasizes the importance of living a fulfilled life true to oneself while maintaining loving relationships despite differing opinions.
Navigating Family Relationships
Vuolo’s journey has inevitably affected her relationships with family members. She maintains a close bond with her mother but describes her relationship with her father as “complicated.” Despite the challenges, Vuolo strives to balance her newfound freedom with maintaining family connections.
