House Speaker Mike Johnson has turned up the volume on a message many conservatives have felt for years: the fight in America is no longer about small policy tweaks, but a clash of worldviews. Speaking to Christian leaders and voters, he says we now face an “open contest” between Americans who believe rights come from a Creator and a growing movement that sees the state as the highest authority. Johnson argues that once a society rejects God as the source of liberty, it opens the door for Marxism, socialism, and eventually centralized control that crushes individual freedom.

Johnson stresses that this is not theory or campaign talk, but something Americans can see in real elections. He points to recent primary wins by Democratic Socialists of America‑backed candidates, including Zohran Mamdani in New York, and says these races show how far the Democrat Party has shifted. In his view, figures like Mamdani, Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, and Bernie Sanders now represent the party’s core, not its fringe. Johnson calls their agenda openly socialist and Marxist, and warns that they want to “fundamentally transform this country” by tearing down free‑market capitalism and traditional institutions.

What Johnson Says the Marxist Agenda Looks Like

Johnson lays out a list of goals he ties directly to Marxist thinking and the Democratic Socialists of America platform. He says these activists want to abolish all borders, empty prisons, defund police, and give the federal government control over production. Most alarming to him, they seek to abolish the United States Senate, pack the Supreme Court, and strip away checks and balances that protect citizens from raw government power. He describes this as a blueprint for a “Marxist‑run legislature,” where one radical chamber would be able to push through extreme laws without the moderating guardrails our Founders designed.

Independent looks at the Democratic Socialists of America program back up some of Johnson’s concerns, even while they challenge his wording. The official DSA document calls for abolishing the Senate and replacing it with an expanded House of Representatives, ending the presidency and Supreme Court, and restructuring the government in ways most Americans would see as extreme. It also demands public ownership of major infrastructure and natural resources, and sweeping changes on immigration, including ending deportations and enforcement actions. While the document does not use Johnson’s exact phrase “Marxist‑run legislature,” its goals align with a hard‑left vision of reshaping the American system from the ground up.

Faith, History, and the Cost of Marxism

Johnson ties today’s policy fights to a much deeper moral and spiritual battle. He argues that Marxism, communism, and socialism all start from the same basic idea: there is no God, so the state becomes the source of rights and meaning. That view, he says, directly opposes America’s founding belief that our rights are given by a Creator and cannot be taken away by politicians. Johnson reminds audiences that twentieth‑century communist regimes led to the murder of tens of millions of innocent people, and warns that Americans cannot shrug off that history as if it could never happen here.

To drive home the stakes, Johnson points to the words “In God We Trust” above the House chamber as a symbol of what is being contested. He notes that Congress placed that motto there in 1962 as a direct message to Soviet communism, announcing that America’s hope and identity rest in God, not in the party or the state. Now, he says, radical Democrats and their socialist allies are working to undo that legacy by stripping faith from public life and building a government that answers only to itself. Johnson urges citizens to see this not as normal politics, but as a warning that the “barbarians are in the gate” and that the survival of the constitutional republic depends on people of faith standing firm.
